Trendlines Statewide Monthly Construction Data- March 2025

Alabama Cement Shipments End Year Lower Than 2023

Data recently released by the United States Geological Service showed cement shipments declined by 16% in December 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. The state saw tonnage contract for four consecutive months and end the year 1.1% lower than 2023.

Looking to ready mix yardage, we estimate 398,309 cubic yards were placed during the month. The estimated yardage is an 11.1% decrease from November yardage. Looking to residential construction data, a recent report by the Alabama Center for Real Estate estimated 2,590 homes have been started in Alabama during the first two months. This is a 2.6% decrease compared to the first two months of 2024. Commercial construction is also facing headwinds according to the AIA Billing Index. February’s billing index came in at 45.5. According to a report, inquiries in February fell for the first time since the height of the COVID pandemic.

We anticipate a continued softening in tonnage and corresponding yardage in January and February due to the significant cold weather the state experienced to start 2025.
