October Shipments Rebound from September Lows

Data recently released by the United States Geological Service showed cement shipments declined by 2.4% in October 2024 compared to the same period in 2023.However, the 165,026 tons represents the largest tonnage shipped to the state in a month since October 2023. Looking to ready mix yardage, we estimate 611,091cubic yards were placed during the month. The estimated yardage is a 39% increase over September yardage.

Looking to residential construction data, the Wells Fargo Home Builder’s Sentiment Index came in at 49 for the South Region in December. Anything below 50 isconsidered a negative outlook. The number only crossed 50 in 3 of the 12 months in 2024.

The AIA Billing Index for December is also showing softness in commercial construction. The billing index dropped from 49 in November to 44 in December. Like the Home Builder Sentiment, any number below 50 is forecast a negative outlook.
