John Sorrell receives AIA President’s Award at annual Design Conference

The 2023 American Institute of Architects (AIA) Alabama Chapter’s Design Conference was recently held at the Perdido Beach Resort where John Sorrell, president of the Alabama Concrete Industries Association (ACIA), received the AIA President’s Award.

The award is given to individuals who have been longtime supporters of the state’s chapter and the architect community. Barrett Penny, president of AIA’s Alabama Chapter, presented the award.

“When I came to work for the ACIA in 1998, I recognized the importance of the architectural community to the concrete industry and made the decision to become an AIA education provider,” states Sorrell. “The association started supporting the state and local chapters with our time and financial commitment.”

Through this support, Sorrell has had the opportunity to meet and work with many amazing and talented designers, which he finds to be the most fulfilling aspects of his job at the concrete association.

“Being presented the President’s Award is a wonderful honor and I am extremely grateful to be selected,” he said. “I was extremely humbled to have been selected as its recipient.”

Sorrell currently serves on the AIA state chapter’s board and is an officer on the Architect Foundation Board. He looks forward to many more years of supporting a great industry and association.
