Annual Business Meeting held in Birmingham
After severe weather forced us to postpone, the Alabama Concrete Industries Association held its 2025 Annual Business Meeting at Greystone Country Club in Birmingham on Thursday, April 24th. The meeting began at 10:30am with presentations of the ACIA Foundation scholarships, the Sam Reed Memorial Scholarship, the 2025 Chairman’s Award, Ronald Davis Memorial Scholarships, Safety Award, Environmental Award, and Driver Lifetime Achievement Award. Following the awards, lunch was served and Secretary Greg Reed was the guest speaker.
ACIA Foundation Scholarships
For the past 30 years, the Alabama Concrete Industries Foundation has awarded scholarships to students enrolled in building science, engineering or architecture at our state’s universities. Since 1993, we have awarded more than 65 scholarships totaling over $330,000. Since 2006, the foundation has given away two $8,000 scholarships annually. The scholarship recipients are both outstanding students. Nineteen students applied for the scholarships this year, and the decision was once again a difficult one. However, the two winners selected were Hunter Desmond and Carolina Triboni.
Sam Reed Memorial Scholarship
In 2017, the Sam Reed Memorial Scholarship was created to honor and remember Sam Reed, a great leader and past board chairman. Following his untimely death in 2016, the board of directors established the scholarship for students enrolled at Auburn University majoring in building science, architecture or engineering. This year, we received 13 outstanding applications, and the recipient was Kaitlyn Zinn.
Ronald Davis Memorial Scholarships
The Ronald Davis Memorial scholarship program was established to assist the children of members who will be continuing their studies at a 2-year or 4-year school or who are currently enrolled at an Alabama college. This year we presented three $3,000 scholarships one $3,500 scholarship. The recipients were Maggie Sanders, Karly Mims, Cason Swancey and Logan Griffin. All of these recipients are outstanding students, and we look forward to seeing what their future holds.
2025 Chairman’s Award- Chris Davis
In 2009, the ACIA created the Chairman’s Award to honor outstanding leaders in the concrete industry. This year’s winner, Chris Davis with Bama Concrete, could not have been more deserving of this recognition. Chris is no stranger to the concrete world. Both his father and grandfather were part of the industry, and he credits much of his own and the firm’s success to his belief in hiring good employees and more importantly treating them well. Five of the company’s leaders have been with Bama over 20 years. He also credits much of his success to the lessons he learned from his father and hopes to keep Bama Concrete successful for at least another 75 years.
Safety, Environmental & Driver Lifetime Achievement
Heidelberg Materials received the Safety Award. In 2024, they had zero Lost Time Injuries, thanks to the strong safety culture they have built. Their employees must wear required PPE on jobsites and plant grounds, and they enforce vehicle segregation to create safe zones for all personnel.
MMC’s Theodore Plant received the Environmental Award for its continued commitment to environmental excellence. The plant has operated for years without any violations or significant spills, always striving to meet and exceed all regulatory requirements.
They regularly review their SWPPP and SPCC plans, take water samples to ensure compliance, and use a check dam and stone waterway to filter water before discharge. These efforts helps protect local water quality and operate responsibly.
Rodrick Cook with Ready Mix USA received the Driver Lifetime Achievement Award. He has driven for USA for the past 23 years and also spent seven years driving for Gentry Ready Mix. For the past four years he has served as a driver trainer. Rodrick is described by his peers as dependable, reliable, loyal and valuable. He is also the most requested driver at the plant. Congratulations, Rodrick!
