Trendlines Statewide Monthly Construction Data-January 2026

Alabama Cement Shipments Fall in August USGS Report

Data recently released by the United States Geological Service shows cement shipments decreased by 12.6% in August 2025 compared to the same month in 2024. We estimate 509,936 cubic yards of concrete were placed during the month. Yardage for the first eight months of 2025 has now fallen behind 2024 totals by 6%. According to a recent report by the American Cement Association, the only Southeastern states tracking above their 2024 totals are Louisiana and North Carolina.

Examining industry economic reports, the University of Alabama’s Center for Real Estate August report shows projected home building starts are off by 7.6% compared to the first eight months of 2024. Looking to the AIA Billing Index, the number came in at 48.5 in December 2025, a slight increase from the November Report. Finally, looking to the NAHB builder sentiment index, the index came in at 37 in January, a 2 percent decrease from December. Any number below 50 on the AIA index or NAHB index forecast a slowdown in construction activity. With the announcement yesterday the Fed would be holding interest rates for the time being, we anticipate a continued softening in the construction market.
