Data recently released by the United States Geological Service show 83,034 tons of cement were shipped to the state during February 2020. The February total is an 11.8% decrease over the same period in 2019. Comparing February 2020 and January 2020, tonnage slipped by approximately 9%. The data is not surprising given what felt like biblical flooding during the first 60 days of the year. Most members reported strong March and April volume, which should translate to increased cement tonnages in our next report.
Looking to ready mix volumes, we estimate 307,697 yards of concrete were placed during February. The tonnage represents the lowest output since December 2018. With COVID19 likely to weigh on the state’s construction sector in 2020, the industry will be challenged to replicate the nearly 4.9 million yards placed in 2019.
The association is in the planning process for an Economic Forecast Webinar to assist the membership in planning for the second half of the year.
