Data recently released by the United States Geological Service shows 112,816 tons of cement were shipped to the state during July 2020. Cement shipments to the state grew by 1.9% over the same period in 2019. The state has now seen an increase for two consecutive months. The cement shipments for July are also the high water mark for the month since 2008.
Looking to ready mix volumes, we estimate 417,758 yards of concrete were placed during the month. The state exceeded 400,000 cubic yards for the fourth consecutive month. While the state has seen an increase for two consecutive months, the state is still lagging behind 2019’s totals by 5.9%.
Examining the national construction indexes, The Home Builder Sentiment for October in the South currently stands at 83. Anything above 50 forecast a growth in the homebuilding market. The AIA billing index for the month of September stands at 47. While still below 50, the index grew 20% from 40 in August.
