According to data recently released by the USGS for August 2019, 113,290 tons of Portland cement was shipped to Alabama during the period. The tonnage represents a contraction of 1.98% in comparison to August 2018. August’s slide brings the state in the red for 2 of the last 3 months. Comparing August 2019 tonnage to July 2019, the state experienced a growth of 2.2% month over month. Of note in the latest USGS report, cement totals for July 2019 were revised downwards by 10,920 tons from 121,605 to the updated 110,686 tons.
Utilizing the cement shipments to estimate ready mix yardage for August 2019, we estimate 419,513 cubic yards of concrete was placed during the month. For the year, ready mix yardage is 7.15% ahead of 2018 totals.
Reports this month by the National Homebuilders Association demonstrate a continued confidence by homebuilders. The report for November 2019 list the index at 70. The number represents the second highest total in 2019.
Looking to AIA billings, the billing index grew by 2.3% from September 2019 to October 2019 and now sits at 52%. When the number is above 50%, outlook for the next 9 months is considered positive and growth is expected.Trendlines Newsletter
