January Residential Permits Show Strong Start

The mild winter in Alabama has translated to a strong start for residential building permits across the state. There were 812 permits issued for January 2017 compared to only 659 for the same period in 2016. This translates to a 23.2% increase. Looking at individual markets, 16 of the reported 21 major markets were up for the month with 5 markets lagging. Mobile lead the state with a 200% increase over January 2016.

Cement and Ready Mix Data have Mixed Results

Cement and ready mix data for December 2016 featured an unexpected decrease of 5.3% over the same period in 2015. Tonnage for the month as reported by the USGS was 70,168 metric tons. You have to go back to February 2015 to find lower shipments for a month. Examining the year as a whole, Alabama experienced a 10.3% increase over the same 12 months in 2015. Total tonnage for the year was 1,098,900 metric tons. This translates to an estimated 4,073,640 cubic yards of concrete. This is the first time the state has crossed the 4 million yard mark in many years.
