Trendlines Monthly Statewide Construction Data

Cement shipments to Alabama in December rose by 19% over the same period in 2016, according to recently released USGS cement data. For the month, 86,587 tons were shipped in the state versus 70,168 in December 2016. The increase marks the sixth consecutive month shipments have outpaced the previous year’s tonnage. While December was positive compared to the previous year, tonnage contracted by 23% compared to November 2017. The December drop is much larger than the previous 4 years, but can somewhat be attributed to the record November tonnage. Estimated ready mix yardage for December was 321,004 compared to 260,134 in 2016. Estimated yardage is derived from the NRMCA conversion formula based on USGS cement tonnage. For the year, 4,240,968 yards were placed in the state compared 4,073,640 the previous year. The increase represents a 3.95% growth year over year.
