The ACIA presented its 2011 Chairman’s Awards to Ronald Davis, Uday Bhate, Bill Pritchard, Sherman Suitts, and Gary Wyatt at the association’s annual meeting on January 28, 2011. The Chairman’s Award is presented to individuals who have spent their career working to improve the concrete industry and the association.
Ronald Davis has run Bama Concrete in Tuscaloosa for the past 45 years. During this time he has grown the company from one plant to 12 plants serving central and Northwest Alabama. Mr. Davis has been recognized by AGC and the Homebuilders for his many years of giving back to the construction industry. Mr. Davis served multiple years on the ACIA’s board. Wayne Dickerson of Lafarge presented the award to Mr. Davis.
Uday Bhate began Bhate Geosciences only one year removed from Georgia Tech. Over the last 40 years, Uday has been the principal of record on over 10,000 projects. Mr. Bhate has been at the forefront of improving concrete testing. Glenn Bishop of LBYD presented the award to Mr. Bhate.
Bill Pritchard began his concrete career with Lehigh Cement Company. After a number of years in the cement industry, Bill came to Birmingham to serve as President of Southern Ready Mix, at the time one of the largest concrete companies in Alabama. Bill ended his career with Vulcan Materials as the sales manager. Bill served multiple years on the ACIA Board of Directors. Bill Holden of Ready Mix USA presented the award to Mr. Pritchard.
Sherman Suitts spent 30 years working for Vulcan Materials. During his tenure, Sherman held multiply high level positions including Vice President of Sales and General Manager. Sherman was also highly involved with legislative affairs for Vulcan. In 2008, Sherman served as the Chairman of the ACIA. Kelly Harrington of Vulcan Materials presented the award to Sherman’s daughter Jill. Sherman lost a long fight with cancer in October of 2010.
Gary Wyatt form Gary C Wyatt Inc in 1976. Since its humble beginning, Gary has led the firm to be one of the most distinguished construction firms not only in Alabama but the southeast. Gary C. Wyatt is yearly ranked as one of the top 20 construction firms in Alabama, been recognized as one of the top 100 private companies in the state, and in 1992 was ranked the General Contractor of the Year by Associated Subcontractors of America. Joe Kelley of Sherman Industries presented the award to Gary Wyatt.
