The Alabama Concrete Industries Association recently participated in the Southwest Alabama Workforce Council’s “Worlds of Opportunity,” a hands-on career expo for 8th grade students in the eight counties of Southwest Alabama.

The 4th annual event was held September 25-26 at the Mobile Civic Center, and hosted nearly 10,000 students.

Its purpose is to expose students to careers available locally and to demonstrate what each career involves through an interactive, engaging series of activities. The decision to target 8th grade students was a strategic one; eighth grade is a critical year for students as they are deciding on coursework pathways for the remainder of their high school years and beyond.

ACIA was proud to be involved with the event, and made concrete coasters with the students which gave them a fun souvenir to take home. A special thanks to Nathaniel Reynolds with BASF, Sally Bradford with Middle Tennessee State University and Russell Simmons with Bayou Concrete who volunteered their time to help with the project.

Twelve different industries were showcased in exhibits, which were the “Worlds.” The following industries were featured: Aerospace, Automotive Technology, Communications, Construction, Energy, Engineering and Design, Healthcare, Hospitality and Tourism, Manufacturing, Maritime, Public Service and Safety.
